Hitachi DZ-HV565E High Definition (1080p) SD Video Camera

I've been looking through some of the little HD SD-based camcorders recently and I came across the Hitachi DZ-HV565E in Argos. However, this video camera seems to be a bit of a mystery online, there just isn't much information about it, I couldn't even find any test footage on YouTube.

Hitachi DZ-HV565E

Anyway, I took the plunge and bought one from Argos today and so far I've been very impressed. The manual states that the camera is "exclusively available through Argos" which is probably why there isn't much information about it online. I did manage to find some information about the HV564E (http://mackney.com/blog/2008/12/hv564e-hd-sd-video-camera.html), which, apart from the back of the viewfinder, looks the same.

Here's a quick run through some of the key points in the DZ-HV565E specification:

  • 1080p high definition
  • 5x optical zoom
  • Automatic and Manual focus
  • 5 mega-pixel still camera
  • 2.5 inch screen
  • Web cam mode
  • 3 led lights on the front for filming in low light
  • Various recording settings, including night mode
  • Macro mode
  • Removable rechargeable battery
  • Sound and video outputs for playback directly to a high definition TV (cables too)

What you get

I was quite impressed with the feel of the camera. It's quite small, not pocket small, but not as bulky as some DV based video cameras.

In more detail

When you start the camera up you are greeted by a bizarre tune and the menu operates with a confirmation beep which you will be happy to know you can disable.

The camera has three modes: video, stills and sound recording. For a low price camera (£117) it comes with a lot of settings which you might not expect. It can record in resolutions of 640x480 (VGA), 1280x720 (720p) and 1440x1080 (1080p) with each resolution offering quality levels of economy, standard and fine. The video recording modes also range from fully automatic to user specified with pre-sets for portraits, night, sport, landscape, sunset, beach/snow and spotlight. The white balance by default is set to automatic (and this seems quite responsive) but there are also options for daylight, cloudy, florescent 1 & 2 and tungsten. The camera will also let you shoot in several colour modes: standard, vivid, black and white, and sepia tone. Contrast and sharpness can also be set to standard, hard or soft.

I guess most people looking at this sort of range of camera just want to point and shoot, and the automatic modes seem to make this quite easy, but it's nice to know that you can customise other things if you want to.

The stills mode lets you select ISO ratings of 64, 100, 200, 400 and auto. There's an image stabilization mode available, and you can also capture pictures in single or continuous mode.

Here's a quick video I made today. This was recorded in the highest quality mode (1080p fine) in the landscape setting. At the time of the video it was midday, fairly cloudy and very windy:

Here's a quick panoramic I filmed in Norwich:

I hope this has been helpful for anyone who is trying to find out a little more about the camera. I'll post some more videos when I have made some and I'll also try and upload some photos taken with the camera. Please feel free to post any questions in the comments too.

My mini review of the DZ-HV565E

I bought one a week ago for a skiing holiday and it was ace, got loads of great shots. Put a vid together on iMovie on my Mac in a snap and i love it.

Here are a few of my short vids.
http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=7VuFYLTySsA
http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=SYpVxISka8A

Pros
Battery life is very good, cannot give figures because it lasts so long i could not run it out in 5 days of on and off use.
Quality of video is great, autofocus be a bit off sometimes but a tap of the zoom button will fix this.
Its very light weight and small. Operating it on the slopes was easy.
Comes with all leads and bits, just grab a SDHC card (i got 2 x 2GB which did 50 mins of medium quality vid each, for £8. You may want more)
Nice design!
Sooo many features, even has face recognition.
I found the menus easy to use, even being a typical bloke and never reading the manual(i am no cheat)
It uses SD cards, cheap and come is high capacity.
The photos it takes can be upto 7mp, when you pause the video you can get some great shots for Facebook:-)
It starts up really quickly, 1sec!

Cons
If you listen, you can hear the autofocus in the background on the vid moving, but this is hardly noticeable.
The zoom is one speed to can look a bit jerky on play back if you go in and out, also the zoom buttons are a bit difficult low down for the thumb but you get used to this after a day or two.
It looks more expensive than it feels and the cables are pretty cheap. Although this helps to keep it light and cheap!
You cannot plug the mains adaptor directly into the camera.
Uhh thats it really

This cam seems to fill a gap in the market between portable cheapish cameras like the flip with its average video quality an soap bar design an the high end high def camcorders that have a built in HDD.

My conclusion is its great value for money and makes a great casual camcorder for todays hi-def thirsty, laptop editing generation. Feel free to send me any questions and i will do my best to answer them.

Right off to pack it away ready for my summer holiday.

ps Well done Dan, i could find nothing on the net about this last week, great to have a place to tell others.

Thank you for adding your review. I totally agree about the mains adaptor not plugging in. I would have much preferred no charger and the camera charges the battery from the mains, but for the price, (and what you do get for the price) I can't complain! Thanks for posting the videos as well :)

hitachi vid cam

I have one of these cute litle cams. Unfortunately due to computer probs etc I could do with a copy of the cd. Is there any chance you could copy and attach the files to an email and send it to me. This would be much appreciated cos i'm sure you've realised that there is no official way to download this stuff.

Thanks

Cables?

Does it come with a firewire cable? I really want to edit with this Camcorder on my Macbook with iMovie 08, but I'm not sure how easy it connects????

Thanks for the review - Do you know if Windows Movie Maker can edit the video file on your PC? - or would that lose some of the resolution?

Dan's picture

Hi Graham I believe there is

Hi Graham

I believe there is an HD specific version of Windows Movie Maker which comes with Vista Home Premium and Ultimate (http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windows-vista/fea...).

The camera produces .mp4 files, which I don't think WMP or WMM support by default. I installed the 'Windows Essentials Codec Pack' (http://www.mediacodec.org/) and this enabled me to play the files in Windows Media Player (I think I had to tell it to open the file type first), so I guess this may also work for WMM. This also allowed me to stream the files from the camera onto my Xbox 360 in HD (after renaming the files from .mp4 to .wmv, as the Xbox doesn't recognise .mp4).

I also spotted a conversation about editing .mp4 files with WMM which might be of interest: http://www.vistax64.com/general-discussion/199933-...

I hope this helps!

Thanks

Aerial Photography

Hmm i think this may be just perfect for what i want, i am looking for a camera to attatch to my Nitro Heli, but everything seems either A, Cheap and poor quality video, or B, Too Heavy and too expensive to risk putting on my Heli.

I think this my be just what i am looking for unless there is something better that anyone can suggest? The flycamone2 which is actually designed for flying rc models really has poor quality video.

Dan's picture

Camera weight

I guess you've seen but if not the weight of the camera is approximately 162g. The only issue I can think of that you might have with this Hitachi is the shape and weight distribution when the screen is folded out. As soon as you close the screen the camera shuts down.

Have you looked at the Aiptek C100 (HD 720p)? It's slightly cheaper (£83.19) than the Hitachi (slightly lighter too at 128g) so it might be of interest.

It looks like there are some videos recorded with it for a quick quality review:
http://www.vimeo.com/videos/search:aiptek%20c100

Good luck! It sounds like a fun project :)

HD playback and some other questions

Hey thanks for your reviews. I have a few questions so sorry if it's a bit lengthy, but would be grateful if anyone can help:

1) Can you tell me if you need a powerful computer to playback the 720p clips from this camcorder (e.g. a pentium 2.4 with 128mb ati card ok)? Only some of the sample clips I see on the net play back slightly jittery, can't tell whether it's the camcorder or my computer. Or if you're not doing any editing and just want to play it back straight from the SD card, does the camcorder itself do a good job of direct playback through an HD tv?

2) Does it have a tripod socket?

3) Seems to be similar/exact features of the HITACHI DZ-HV564E (from Comet) - probably the difference is a UK plug and exlusive to Argos - Comet reviews seem to say the 564E has a European plug - does this have a UK plug? Incidentally, I believe both are a rebadged Sanyo HD100 - searching for video clips of this seem to show a decent quality little cam

4) I'm stuck between getting this, a Kodak Zi6 and a standard DVD quality SD camcorder with perhaps more features, e.g. JVC MS100 or Panasonic HDC-SD7. Though the quality of this for the price and the 5X optical zoom seems much better. Having had this for a few days, are you happy with the quality? I've seen awful picture drop outs/panning jitter from the Kodak Zi6, both lack image stabilisation, but I think this one seems better at that judging from the various clips on the net from this, the HV564E and Sanyo HD100 (if they are all indeed the same camera.....)

Any comments or opinions in response welcome :-) (and more sample video clips from this model would be great!)

Thanks
Simon

Dan's picture

Hi Simon, I'll do my best: 1)

Hi Simon, I'll do my best:

1) I'm on a Core 2 Quad with 4GB RAM and I find sometimes that YouTube HD clips playback a bit jittery so maybe it's not the best test. I haven't tried the camera directly on my TV yet but I've streamed video to my Xbox (which displays the videos in 720p) and it was very good.

2) Yes, I haven't tried it out but I guess it's a standard fitting.

3) Yes, this only comes with a UK plug (not European).

4) I wasn't very impressed with the Kodak Zi6, especially in low light conditions (I had one which had a problem with the sound, but I guess that was a one off), and like you said there's a lot of people talking about frame drop outs. If you specifically want a camera that size/shape (like a large phone) you might be better off waiting for a Creative Vado HD which I believe has a nice wide-angle lens.

I hope this helps. I still need to have more of a play with my camera, so I'll upload some more clips soon! Any more questions please feel welcome to post them :)

Cheers

Hitachi DV camera playback probs?

I just watched this clip http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aqluxGE-JKk on U Tube and it was jittery, however, if you go to Internet Explorer, tools, internet options, browsing history, settings, view files and then scroll down to the bottom of the file list you should see a google mp4 file. Copy and paste to your desktop and then view with VLC free media player or w media player if you have the codecs installed, and the result is quite different. Good quality for a cheapo camera and not jittery playback. My only issue with this clip which is linked in a therad above, is the colour temp changes as he pans around the river?

I have noticed the changing

I have noticed the changing color temp too in some of my footage, it can be reduced a bit using the manual controls, which the cam will remember as long as you don't close the screen

I think you're right - the cam was set to 'auto' when this was shot, so when you look into the light the sensitivity is automatically decreased etc. Using the manual controls should produce a more consistent result.

The camera does support SDHC up to 8GB. However, there have been some issues with various makes of SDHC card not working so I would try to stick to the ones that are confirmed working (SanDisk, for example).

Hitachi Memory card

I purchased a Scandisk 4G SDHC class 6 card , HD Video from Play.com for £9.49 and this works perfectly. The transfer rate is much better than the class 2 I took from a Digital camera. The biggest problem that I find is getting the camera to keep the settings I chose, ieg "digital on" option . Any guidance would be welcomed.

Low light?

Hey guys i to saw this camera in argos today and could find no info on it so thanks for all this...am wondering how good is the quality in low light? and if someone has the camera could they post a clip that is filmed in Low light? I will be using it on holiday mostly am going to disney world this year so would like to film the fireworks and parades so any info would be much appreciated...

2. is there a limit on what card you can put in this camera? some i have seen say it is compatible up to a 8GB card will this work with a 16GB card? and also how much footage can you fit on a 8 or 16gb card whicever is biggest at the full HD quality with this camera? any help would be much appreciated thanx again

Dan's picture

The specification says the

The specification says the camera can take up to an 8GB card. We've tried a 16GB in the camera and it came up with an error, so I guess that's it. Saying that though, I've got a 4GB in mine (SanDisk SDCH) and this will give me 1 hour 4 minutes in 1080p, 1 hour 25 minutes in 720p and 2 hours 48 minutes in VGA (all set to 'fine' quality). Also, bear in mind that the camera comes with a rechargeable battery specific for the camera (not rechargeable AAs, like some do), so you're also limited by this. The battery is an NP60 3.7V 1050mAh.

The camera's not bad in low light. It has a night mode which seems to work quite well, and also three LEDs on the front. I'll try and get some low light clips online and I'll post them here soon.

Problem

I b ought this camcorder alongwith a Lexar 8Gb SDHC card today and am having problems already. After 10-15 secs in video mode the camcorder locks up and i get an hourglass image on the screen, which won't go away and locks the device up. I also get a card error or card full message flash up, even tho i haven't used it yet. I was wondering if the device is compatible with the SDHC card or should i get just a SD card . Hopefully someone can shed some light on this for me. Thx in advance.

Hitachi DZ-HV565E

Like simon mine locks up with egg timer. I am using the SD card recomended in Argo cataslog (Lexar 2G)

Sorry to hear this guys. Have

Sorry to hear this guys. Have you tried formatting the card in the camera (rather than on your computer)? I think this is in menu > right arrow > format. Also, have you tried another card to make sure it's not a problem with the card itself?

FYI, I'm using a 4GB SanDisk SDHC card from Argos in mine and so far so good.

I hope you get the problem sorted.

hitachi hd camcorder from argos

i bought one a hitachi camcorder from argos stores.hd dz-hv565e. the cd that was included got missing one day at a computer cafe. i find it difficult to play videos, or edit videos on nero burner etc. they video do not appear at all. can any body help maybe with a cd disk or something to load and edit my videos to burn. thanks. my email is andylumeh@live.co.uk and my telephone number is 0789 650 8193. please get in touch asap.

sdhc card

bought my hitachi after reading all the info on this page i decided not to buy the memory card form argos but from amozan i got an 8gb scandisk which in argos is £34 but from amazon its £10.00 it took 3 days to get to me i did every thing the instruction manual told me to and it works perfect it saved all mysettings its brilliant im so pleased with it.the manualbook says use scandisk ..i choose 8gb number 2

Problem Solved

I hope you get to read this Richard as i believe we are encountering the same problems. I also bought mine from Argos.

A friend of mine just brought his camcorder over after i had explained my situation to him and we discovered it is the card. He has a 4GB SD no name brand he bought off ebay and it works perfectly in my camcorder. We tried my 8GB Lexar in his and it didn't work in his camcorder either.

So, there is good news and bad news here, there is no problem with the Hitachi, and from what ive seen so far i,m very impressed. I,m off to Toronto and Niagara Falls at end of month (hence reason for camcorder purchase) and looking forward to some great footage . The bad news i.m afraid is that Argos have a no refund policy on their SD cards so it looks like i wasted almost £30 on an 8GB card.

I hope this helps Richard and whoever else might be having these problems. I can assure you its not the device. Once you find the right card and i,m following Dans lead here and purchasing the SanDisk 4GB , i believe you will be more than happy with the Hitachi.

All the best.

Hitachi DZ-HV565E

Thanks Simon, I will try a different SD card. Perhaps it would be better to borrow one to check?- there may be others that it won't like.
I WILL take this up with Argos as their latest catalog recommends this Lexar one- worse I bought one and my sister did too. It was a present for my wife...
I also have another complaint. The camera bag (570/7243) they recommend is too small and camcorder won't fit in it!
Will keep you updated as to the outcome.
Richard.

SD Card- problem solved.

All OK now Simon. I remembered there was a 2 Gb SD card in my stills camera. Fingers crossed was it Argos one?
Oh joy its a Tesco one and the Camcorder now works.
Thanks again. Wife will be pleased. Now to get cash back on the bag or one it fits into..
Richard.

Thanks for posting this guys - it does look like the camera maybe has some issues with some SD cards. I just wondered if anyone has tried formatting the card (if it doesn't work) in the camera?

Thanks

Hitachi HV565E

Hi!

I've just bought the Hitachi camcorder from Argos. I've just taken a brief video run but have hit a problem. I have an excellent Philips 42" Ambilight HD television. At the back I located the sockets (ie colour coded the same as as the YPbPR HD out cable). Unfortunately I can't get the camcorder to talk to my TV. I had no problems with the normal AV cable so I set it with that and just unplugged that cable from the camcorder and, without any other adjustments plugged the yellow end of the HD cable into the HD camcorder socket but just got a blank screen on the camcorder and a blue one on the TV. Any suggestions?

Best wishes

Paul

Hitachi camcorder - not compatible with TV ?

Hi Guys,
I have read your comments with interest, however I have an issue with my Camera talking to my TV.
I have a Samsung 32inch HD TV - and when I connect the camera to it using the supplied HD cable I have a message come up on my TV saying not compatibvle device !! Has anyone had similer issues, and if so any help would be appreciated.

Problem Solved

Hi!

I am now able to link my camcorder using the HD cables. Since the camera option on my TV didn't work, despite doing so in the normal AV mode, I went down the complete list and, to my surprise it was the Ext3 DVD option which linked me up in the HD mode. With a 42" screen and standing close to the TV I couldn't say that the HD quality was quite up to my up-scaled DVDs but it was miles better than the AV output, presumably standard by default. I guess now I'd better learn to hold the camcorder steady and wait for a day when it's not raining!

Cheers

Paul

Hi Paul

That's good news. I haven't tried mine on the TV yet but I have noticed in general that, probably because of the HD, every little shake seems to be picked up. Glad to hear it's working though!

SD cards and low light

Hi Dan.

Great write up!

I think it is pretty much the same camera as the one on my blog It's just that my one was exclusive to Curry's and your one is exclusive to Argos! ... not very exclusive then eh!

I also found that mine locked up on some 8GB HCSD cards. One that I have found is the Kingston - Flash memory card - 8 GB - Class 4 - SDHC at Amazon for only £6.75

Last night I filmed my Scalextric in low light and also used the led light. It can be seen on Youtube for an idea of quality ...

Cool video. I haven't played Scalextric in ages! I like the Minis too!

Yeah it looks the same (feature-wise, anyway). Very strange about the exclusivity, I don't know why they would do that. What's even weirder is that the camera seems to have some resembelence to a Sanyo camera (http://techmoan.wordpress.com/2009/01/17/unnanounc... - half way down the page).

At least we can say there are two brands of card that seem to work no problems (I'm running a SanDisk 4GB SDHC)!

Thanks Richard

Connection

Hi, could someone answer a question for me. Im looking into buying a HD camcorder and was wondering when it comes to connecting to a HDTV is it done the same way as i would connect my PS3? Is the connection on the camera the same kind of HDMI as PS3/SKYHD? My t.v has a DVI input and in some pictures i have seen that some cameras come with blue and green cables for t.v so would like to know if its a different kind of HD connection altogether. Hope this makes sense, any help would be much appreciated. Matt

Connection

Hi Matt!

As you can see from my messages I had a bit of trouble getting my HD connection recognised by my TV but this is now solved. As to the connector itself, the unified HD out connector consists of 4 standard (ie normal AV mini jacks). 3 of them 3 (colour code green, blue and red) go into the Y Pb and Pr sockets of the TV. The one which goes into the camcorder is also a standard mini (AV) jack and is coloured yellow. The audio out and in is a normal AV connection but, of course the video jack doesn't need to connect to your TV.

I hope that makes sense since I'm very much at the learning stage with my new toy.

SD Memory card

Just bought this beauty from Argos and couldn't wait to unpack it, However i inserted an SD card from my daughters camera and it failed to work (cheap Transcend 2GB). This doesn't concern me too much as i've noticed on this forum that the device can be quite choosy as to which cards it works with.
I've taken receipt at work of a Kingston 8GB sdhc class 6 card from Ebuyer (£12.99) so can't wait to get home and give it a whirl. I must add that the camcorder looks to be everything i expected for the price. Light in weight terms, Plastic but fairly well finished and small and neat. I'll keep you all informed and post some footage when i get chance.

Gutted

Well.....I got home from work then rushed out to the gym and did the quickest 4km run on the treadmill that i've ever managed before all so i could get home quickly and insert this new Kinston 8 GB sdhc card and to my horror...no recording, I'm not even getting an error message, I've formated it via the camcorder itself so i'm afraid it's time to exchange it at Argos, However there is 1 major problem here, No i have'nt lost my receipt but have just checked the availability on their website and all the stores in Staffs are sold out..That's over 20 stores...once again....Gutted.

Re: Gutted

I really feel for you, Steve! For scanning my weekly shopping I get free Argos vouchers so I thought I might as well use a couple for an *GB sdhc card. However, for the sake of a couple of says I decided to spend £9-50 for a Scandisk 8gig sdhc card and it works perfectly. Despite opting for the free delivery , I ordered it on the 10th and it arrived today (12th).

Paul

Re: Gutted

Sorry! I shouldn't rush off messages just as I'm going out! What I really should have said is that I ordered an 8 GB SanDisk SHDC card from Amazon on Tuesday 10th and it arrived today Thursday 12th. It is, of course, the same card as Argos sells for £29-39 (supposedly reduced from £48-89!)

Anyhow it costs £9-59 from Amazon including postage. and works perfectly. If, like me, you're impatient to get cracking with the camcorder, you can always use other smaller capacity normal SD cards from your digicam(s) in the interim!

Paul

8Gb SanDisk

£9.59 For a 8GBsdhc eh,,That's a right bargain you got there Paul. Just goes to show how much Argos are making on them doesn't it, I took my cam back to Argos, They had none in stock so they have booked me a home delivery for Mon free of charge..Can't wait.

manual focus

Hi folks, i recently purchased the sanyo hd100 version of this camera and noticed that in the description your camera is stated as having a manual focus feature. How does this work on your camera? I wonder if it is just a firmware difference between the two or the sanyo doesnt have this ability :(

Also i had to try several sdhc cards before a found a sandisk 4gb ultra 2 that worked...the problem seems to be the write speed of the cards as the camera records at 8mb/s on highest settings and many cards can't write that fast (some advertise higher speeds but be careful as this is often the read speed of the card not the write speed!). Hope this helps

Manual focus

As far as I can tell this is a red herring. I can't find any manual focus control at all on the Hitachi. Unless someone else can enlighten me I'm pretty sure it only has auto :(

Help needed please!

Hi
We've ordered the camcorder and are now stuck on what SDHC card to buy - is an 8GB SanDisk Class 2 fast enough to record in HD at the highest quality setting please? Don't want to waste money on 2 cards to find they don't work. Thanks for any help.

From experience Class 2 is

From experience Class 2 is too slow for HD video. Play.com have 8Gb class 6 cards (play own brand, though they are actually rebadged sandisk oem cards) for £9.99 inc delivery at the moment. hope this helps

SD Card

I solved the problem of not knowing which card to use. I've actually bought the HV564E from Comet and Mackney's blog at http://mackney.com/blog/2008/12/hv564e-hd-sd-video... told me which card works.
Thanks for all the great details on this page. It really was a help when choosing my camcorder. Mine will turn up on Friday!
Cheers
Rich

SD Card

I just got one of these cameras today.

Picked up an 8GB SanDisk SDHC Card from WHSmith for £14.99. Its a class 2 and works fine. I have tried recording on the highest setting (1440 x 1080, Fine) and not had any problems at all. I have a Canon Eos 450D and use an 8GB class 4 which was recommended. No problem with a class 2 for this camcorder though.

Test footage

I have uploaded 2 sample clips onto vimeo. 1080 and 720.

http://www.vimeo.com/3251725

Dan's picture

Many thanks for posting

Many thanks for posting these, Ross. Very good quality indeed. In fact, I think it plays back smoother on Vimeo than on YouTube.

Test footage

I bought this the other day as a result of the comments on this page. As a Kodak Zi6 user I thought this would be a step up particularly with the 5x zoom and I like the idea of a pistol grip as opposed to the Kodak option. First impressions are very very poor.........so poor that I am certain that I am doing something wrong.

For example, I shot some test footage indoors and when uploaded ot the PC the sound and vision was out of sync. I am using a Sandisk Ultra II 8gb sghc card (Class 4). The test video was also very grainy and the colour representation very poor and quite lacklustre compared to the Zi6.

I desperately wanted this to be better than the Zi6 but unless someone can tell me what I am doing wrong.....it will be on eBay very shortly.

Any help appreciated.

Hi David Sorry to hear about

Hi David

Sorry to hear about the problems with the camera; that's a real shame! Just a first port of call, but is the quality as bad and is the sound out of sync when you play back the videos on the camera itself or directly to a TV? I tried to view the test footage but the video seems to be registered as private.

Thanks
Dan

Test footage

Hi Dan, have amended the upload - didn't realise that it defaulted to private footage - so should be available now. Think I know why the black bars are there......something to do with my editing it in Studio 12 but I still get the black bars on the flip out screen when videoing (Do you get the same ?)

The quality is poor on the PC when I have downloaded the file and played it through Quick Time even with the codec installed. I am just disappointed in general with the quality compared to the Zi6 and the fact that the Hitachi loses all the settings as soon as you turn it off. So if I preferred the colour that the vivid setting gave me I cannot store this is a user setting and use it. Similarly if I was skiing and wanted to use the beach/snow setting I would have to go in each time I wanted to take a movie and set it up - an incredible oversight by Hitachi. also the autofocus is pretty haphazard and it seems to lose focus for no reason or not get the focus at all....!

I genuinely thought this would be a step up and based on some of the footage linked from here I was looking forward to selling the Zi6 and moving on to the Hitachi but at the moment unless there is a way to get better footage from it....I will probably just eBay it and take the hit.

Grateful for your comments and anyone else who may have sussed out how to get it to work better..

Cheers

David

Hi David Well, I can see why

Hi David

Well, I can see why you're not happy; I don't think it should be doing that lol. I do get the bars on mine while filming (on the flip screen), but not on playback. I think this is because the flip out screen is 4:3 ratio and the camera films in 16:9. Have you uploaded any videos from the raw video footage directly from the camera? I think if that is OK than maybe the problem is in your video editing software, or maybe your MPEG codec. It sounds like a technical or configuration issue, as the camera definitely shouldn't be giving you a letterbox type view (mine isn't anyway).

As for the camera losing settings, I haven't noticed this as I just use it in auto mode, but it does seem to remember my setting of 720p and fine picture quality. I have noticed mine go out of focus for no reason, but this seems to happen more on macro shots, the rest seem fine.

Also, regarding the colour, the best quality video I have seen from any of these lower end cameras has been from the Creative Vado HD (which I believe has a wide angle lens) - have a look at this video to see a comparison between the Creative Vado HD and Kodak Zi6 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U4DeeM1XEF0

I guess the point here is they are lower end cameras and because they are HD people are taking them seriously as high quality cameras. The Creative Vado HD and Flip Mino HD should be coming out soon (in the UK) as well which will be interesting to see. I'm pretty sure Sony have one coming out too!

Let me know how you get on.

Thanks David

Test Footage

Hi Dan, you are spot on about the black bars being part of the editing of the video.

I have now uploaded both videos in their raw format to Vimeo

Zi6

http://www.vimeo.com/3258603

Hitachi

http://www.vimeo.com/3258549

You can see clearly though that the Hitachi has noticeable blur and little of the colour richness that the Zi6 is showing. I really don't expect miracles from these at the price but expected a lot more from the Hitachi at almost 1.5 times the price of the Kodak especially with the 5x zoom which is a major selling point.

Maybe on a bright day the Hitachi will come into its own but at the moment I will probably sell it on.

BTW Sony are bringing out an HD cam called the Webbie

I can see what you mean about the colour richness.

The Sony Webbie looks really smart. The one I was thinking of before was the MHS-PM1:
http://www.sonystyle.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet...

One of the major downsides though (or maybe not, for some) is that you will be stuck with the Sony Memory Stick.

Glad you found the source of the problem anyway. Thanks for posting back the extra footage :)

Webcam Mode

Hi Dan,

Have you tried webcam mode? All I get is black screen with just the very brighest parts of the image showing faintly. Obviously the camera is recognized and is being received but the camera and PC disagree on what the numbers mean.

Cannot find any updated drivers, or indeed, any drivers on the intelyweb. HitachiUK disavow any knowledge of his camera. Cannot find a single Hitachi english site that mentions it. I reckon they only ever officially sold it in Japan.

Hi Dave I did try it briefly

Hi Dave

I did try it briefly but for some reason it seemed to run quite jerky. That, coupled with the fact that I couldn't stand the camera up because of it's shape, made me decide not to use it for a web cam lol. I used the drivers which came with the camera disc (running Vista). The quality seemed OK, just quite jerky. Have you tried looking for drivers for the other similar model camera (564E, I think)?

Thanks
Dan

Case

Hi I've just got back from the shops and have unpacked my new camcorder. I'm charging the battery as I type!
I was wondering if anyone one knows of a decent but small case for the HV545e or HV564E as the one it comes with is quite rubbish as I'm sure you will all attest to.
Please help if you can

Only 27 secs of video!

Hi
I've filmed my first test piece and it will only record 27 seconds of video. I have the HV564E from Comet as Richard Mackney has too and I bought the SDHC card recommended by him (Kingston 8GB Class 4). Am I doing anything wrong? I formatted the card in the camera first and it reads it and says I have over 2 hours of space to record but the egg timer comes up after around 27 seconds. This is really frustrating. If anyone can help, please do.

Cheers
Rich

After reading the manual...

After reading the manual, it says that to record highest quality I need a Class 6 card. Is this the case for you guys? I'm very frustrated. I've tried lowering from 1080p fine to standard and economy and it still stops after about 44 seconds. Does anyone know of a Class 6 8GB card that works? As with you guys, I don't have endless amounts of cash to try every make of card.
Cheers

Rich

Standard SD

Hi
I posted on Richard Mackney's blog the same problem and he replied and suggested I try a standard SD card, not SDHC. I 'borrowed' a no-make 2GB SD card from my Wii and it works fine. No problems at all. I would suggest to anyone buying this camera that they try a standard SD card if having problems.
Still no idea about the case though.
Cheers

Rich

Standard SD

Hi Rich!

I, like others, have found that the Sandisk 8gb SDHC card (£9-52 inc postage from Amazon) works fine and I'm sure that you would get over 2 hours on 1080p fine.

I have a question for the experts. I have a Toshiba DVD recorder with up-scaling capability. Should it be possible when I'm playing back in HD (which I can now do) to record and put together a DVD of my clips?

Paul

Hi Paul Sorry for another

Hi Paul
Sorry for another question but my wife is moaning at me about wasting money! Is the Amazon one the Class 2 8gb SDHC card please as it's coming up at £9.59 so she won't believe me that it's the right one!
Cheers and thanks for all of the help

Sandisk Card

Hi Rich!

Yes, I have it in front of me. The card is Sandisk SDHC "Multi - use" 8GB (2).

I can only assume that the (2) indicates Class 2. It certainly works well in all respects.

Dan's picture

Hi Rich I don't know if the

Hi Rich

I don't know if the class has anything to do with it as I'm running a SanDisk 4GB SDHC class 2 card (http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/partNumber/5...) and, although I haven't shot any films longer than 5 minutes, seems to be working fine.

This is just me figuring this out, so I may be wrong, but I think class 2 cards can write up to 2mb/sec. My outdoor test video (recorded in fine 1080p) is 21.8mb (raw file size), and it's about 22 seconds long. If the camera records directly to the card it would have been writing (I guess) at 1mb/sec, or less. Therefore, maybe it's not an issue of card class.

As for the case question; I'm using the pouch that the camera comes with but I'd like something a little more robust too so if you find any, let me know (I'll do likewise).

I hope this helps.

Thanks
Dan

Video Out

Hi all,

I bought a HV565e last week and at first, I was dissapointed with the HD output at 1080p. I then switched the mode in setup from PAL to NTSC and the quality sems way better on a HD LG TV yet most sites I have accessed says that in the UK I should be using PAL. As the option on the menu is for video out, can I record video in either mode without it making any difference and then play about with the setting when I want to replay the vid? I am going on holiday on Sunday so want to make sure I dont arrive home with 6 hours of bad quality video.

Thanks in advance,
David

Out of stock

Been looking at getting one of these over the past few days thanks to this site, but cant find any in stock in any of the stores in my area. Either Argos had very few of these to begin with or they are selling like hot cakes...

The HV564E in Comet is

The HV564E in Comet is virtually identical so maybe you could try Comet to see if they have any in stock - we ordered for home delivery but they are OOS and not expecting any more in but some stores may still have one.

I've had no luck with Comet

I've had no luck with Comet either!

Help with SD Card

Hi,

I have just bought one of these cameras today from Argos and bought the 2GB SD Card recommended from Argos.

Battery was fully charged when we got it (makes a change) but we have inserted the memory card and its saying...

CARD FULL (with a caution sign).

None of the menu's will work...any ideas, anyone please.

Thanks, Gemma

Dan's picture

Hi Gemma Did you try

Hi Gemma

Did you try formatting the card in the camera? I think it's menu, right, then scroll down to format. Also, check that you haven't got the card set to to write protect (there's usually a little switch on the card). I hope this helps. Let me know how you get on.

Thanks
Dan

2 RETURNED

It's me again. I've now returned 2 of these to Argos and won't be getting a 3rd. I've tested my Kingston class 6 8gb sdhc card on 2 other camcorders and it works well. Both the Hitachi's would not record video or take stills. I followed the instructions and formatted the card via the camcorder itself. I'm guessing that this particular has some serious flaws if both of mine had the same problem. Not a happy customer. The problem now is that I can't seem to find a similar cam on the market within the price range capable of filming in 1080..very frustrated !!

Dan's picture

Sorry to hear that :( I guess

Sorry to hear that :(

I guess the camera must have an issue with Kingston cards in general.

SD Cards..

I finally picked one of these up on monday and it worked fine with a 2 GB Sandisk class 2 card that I already have. I wanted a bigger card for longer recording times, so I ordered an 8 GB Sandisk SDHC Class 2 card from play.com, the same model that others have mentioned above as working. It arrived today and lo and behold, it records for 30 seconds and locks the camera up with the egg timer.

So just a warning for others out there, this camera is pretty finicky with sd cards, so its pretty much a matter of luck as to which card will actually work.

I'm going to try ordering another make of card, not sure which sort yet but i'll try and report back on the results.

Sandisk 4GB Extreme III SDHC

Sandisk 4GB Extreme III SDHC Class 6 cards do not work with this camera either. :o(

I wonder if a firmware update

I wonder if a firmware update would fix these issues? Has anyone found anything on this? I couldn't find even a mention of the camera on the Hitachi website (co.uk)

Firmware update

What you say, Dan, reminds me of an experience which I had with a "Morphy Richards" microwave purchased from Argos. I mislaid the handbook and rang Morphy Richards to ask if I might obtain a replacement since no on-line version was available and I couldn't even find a mention of it on their web site. The reply was that "we don't make microwaves". Apparently these are made specifically for Argos, presumably under some sort of licence, so one wonders whether Hitachi would disclaim all responsibility for "our" camcorder.

Paul

Firmware update..

Hi Dan,

thanks for the great blog been very helpful in choosing this. Happy with the quality, cant beleieve how good the external shots look on my 50" 1080p plasma, however internal shots look like a cheapo webcam...anyone know any good settings to improve internal shots

Re the firmware, would be great if there was, however I was looking around, came to the conclusion that some company in taiwan is making them and selling them to anyone to stick their label on it, i.e. see the link

http://www.amazon.com/SVP-1440x1080p-Camcorder-bat...

Im using a standard 2gb SD card (no label) with this and its working without any problems. I;ve orded the 8gb sdhc card for £9.59 from amazon that paul mentioned (thanks paul) so hopefully that works aswel, if not then i'll jut carry on using the SD card.

Fianlly I've got the option to select 7.7 mega pixals on the still side...do u have this?

Dan what 16gb card did u try on this? just wondering if anyone has any different ones from the one u have used to test?

Thanks

My firmware is showing ver 1.06HI...do we all have this?

Hi Rick

The 16gb card which didn't work was a Transend. I'm not sure if it's the make or the fact it's 16gb though lol. The one I'm using is a SanDisk 4gb and it's working great! As for indoor shots, I just leave the cam on auto and it seems to figure itself out lol. I'll check my firmware version out and post back.

Thanks
Dan

Same firmware on mine

Same firmware on mine 1.06HI

That link and what Paul said above is really interesting. It doesn't look like we're going to have much luck finding a firmware update if this is the case.

Here's the Sanyo equivalent (Sanyo Xacti VPC-HD100):
http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_...

We might be able to find a firmware update with one of the other models but it would risky as to whether it will work on ours or not.

Thanks

I have emailed...

Technical@Premiercamera.co.uk for adivce on firmware, they are at the back of the argos manual.

They do have a website but our cam is not on it.

I'll post a reply if I get one from then.

Good luck with emailing them.

Good luck with emailing them. I emailed them for advice on SDHC cards and a possible firmware update, the guy at premier camera forwarded the email on to someone in china who didnt respond at all. When I followed up with an email a couple of days later, the advice from the premier camera guy was "take it back to argos".

Manual Focus HV565E

I have this camera. Very pleased. Mainly for vids of grandaughter who is 1 year old. She crawls very fast and sometimes focus goes in and out. Is there anyway to set this to manual?

I've not figured out the focus yet. There seems to be a macro mode (flower icon) and some other mode (infinity icon?) which I haven't figured out. Has anyone had any luck with this?

Hitachi HV565E

Great blog Dan, bought one of these cameras after reading all the comments. My 7yr old JVC MiniDV camcorder let me down a few weeks back on holiday in India (battery life and heads needed cleaning) so I vowed to go the solid state route!

One Argos in Norwich had one left, so picked it up, unpacked it in the car, battery had some life but no inbuilt memory to allow me to try it out. So off to Morrison's for a Sandisk 2gb SD card (£5.99), popped it in and hey presto it was OK!

Took loads of test shots on all the resolutions, all looked really good on my 32" 720p Panny TV using the component input.

2gb gives nearly 1hr on 720p standard setting, which is equivalent to a MiniDV tape. The 640x480 setting looks as good as the footage the JVC camcorder used to take, so it makes a good replacement, with HD recording and PC connectivity as a bonus.

My 1.5Ghz CeleronM laptop has a problem playing 720p & 1080p clips, plays 640x480 really well thro' RealPlayer and Quicktime.

Haven't got DVD creating software that handles MP4 so I converted them to .VOB via SUPER (eRightSoft) and then made a DVD with InterVideo WinDVD creator. 720p and 640x480 look good but 1080p is a bit jerky.

PROS: Tiny, cheap, HD, battery life, built in light, optical zoom,

CONS: Needs image stabilisation, need to play individual scenes on playback, no HDMI connection

All in all, excellent for the price and the way to go for camcorders.

Dan's picture

Thanks for the tip on the

Thanks for the tip on the decoding software. I thought I'd be able to do this through Windows Movie Maker but it doesn't look like it can import MP4 either.

Hi all, Sorry not posted for

Hi all,

Sorry not posted for a while. Thanks for your reply Jim and Dan. I did get a reply from Hamish at premier however there was nothing fruitful from it. He was not as rude as he was to you Jim, but they were one line answears "no" lol. Dan, I got that 8gb SDHC card and its working wonderfully. I took it to the Fulham vs Man U game (come on you whites) and the image quality is wonderful, sadly my battery died after 10mins so only have a little footage, I will post once I;ve edited etc. Have also been doing some more research re: firmware, we definatly need somthing as Im kinda sick of it not saving the settings, especially when u just wana take it out and shoot. Any how I found the website of the company selling the SVP model I posted about earlier...heres the link http://www.svpcam.com/T_500_High_Definition_Digita...

They have posted firmwares for there other models so im hoping these guys will get and update for it and if they did then I think id be tempted to try it on my camera, here is there reply:

Dear customer,

Thank you for your e-mail.
I am sorry, but we haven't received any information from our manufacturer
about the firmware update of this model.

Would you please check back later?

Sorry if there is any inconvenience.

Best regards,
Customer service

I think their reply confirms what I said earlier about it being made by some company in taiwan! If they do get a firmware update then as I said I will try it, if it works I'll let you know.

On a seperate note as anyone seen the new Toshiba Camileo P30?

Rick

Further to Rick's message, I

Further to Rick's message, I was in Argos on Monday (I purchased an excellent Wharfedale portable DVD player with Photo Frame for £64!) and had a chat with the manager whom I know quite well. He confirmed what we've already surmised ie that Argos has agreements with various manufacturers to use their badges for items made "exclusively!" for Argos. I note that quite recently they have not even bothered with this refinement and, for example, they sell their own badged digi box which is identical in all respects to say the Alba.

Dan's picture

Thanks for the info Rick and

Thanks for the info Rick and Paul, this is really interesting. I wonder if we update with this SVP firmware if our cameras will start saying "SVP" when switched on instead of Hitachi. I wouldn't be surprised if there are more of these sort of products in circulation than you think. What I find really interesting is the perception of value which is attached to the name that they badged the product with. When I saw this camera I was talking to a friend about it and he thought it was strange because you don't see many Hitachi products like this these days. However, I remember thinking it wasn't too much of a risk because I thought they were a fairly reputable brand. Would I have thought this if I saw the same camera under the SVP badge (which I've never heard of before)?

Thanks again for keeping us up to date - I'll keep my ear to the ground and post back if I hear anything else.

Pause and Continue

Hi Dan and All

I have what is probably a very basic question but until the Hitachi my camcorder days stopped with a vintage JVC (state of the art in the early 1980s) VHS(c). I was quite adept with it and by judicious pausing, minimal rewinding and continuing it was possible to make a really smooth longish film without much editing.

Now with the Hitachi it seems to be just stop and start so that each time a separate file is produced. I have been able to edit and make up a decent video cassette (dubbable onto DVD of course) but I can find no way of pausing and continuing (within the same file) when actually recording. Should this be possible? I ask this because I otherwise need to make fairly long runs each time to avoid having to keep re-starting when I play through the TV which, of course gives excellent HD quality. As I say it would be nice to be able to start a long run of film and sit in the audience rather that running backwards and forwards to press the little red button!

Super Encoding Software

Hi guys,

I found this program called at http://www.erightsoft.com/SUPER.html, its free and its really nice in converting the mp4 into avi's (I use DV) for editing. You can also convert to many other formats. Ofcourse there is some loss from the HD to the avi format etc etc

Hi Paul, I was kinda p-eed about the same thing, shame there is no remote with this. Stupidly there is a slideshow option for pictures but its not for movie clips so it does seem we have to get up to start every clip...err firmware upgrade pls.

If i get some time im going to see if there is a good mp4/h.264 file joiner, maybe we can join all the files together in 1 and then put it on the sdhc card and play it without getting up and also without loseing any image quality. If anyone knws of any good joiners then let us knw.

Your other option which ive been doing is converting my files to avi (dv) using the software I mentioned above (its free) and then editing it and compiling it into a dvd. You can use windows movie maker (wmm) for this. I could not directly import the MP4 files into the WMM , I could hear the sound but could not see the image. This does however mean some loss in image quality but no biggie...as it still looks nice.

Hope that helps.

Super Encoding

Thanks for the link, Rick. I've downloaded the program and look forward to experimenting.

shootmode

does this camera have shootmode, it would be quite useful have it.

Useless HV565E

Well after purchasing this camera for a trip of a lifetime to Thailandm imagine my dissapointment when a Sandisk, a Transcend and a Veho card all failed! 2 of them took approximately 1 minute of video befor the egg timer showed up and the other would not even start to record. Add to this the auto focus going in and out continuously (for the minute the thing records), the image shake when zoomed in and the fact that there is no flash for night stills makes this a cheap but useless piece of kit.

bought it at last

Hi guys, first of all thanks a lot for the useful comments here. I got really interested in this camera so ended up buying myself one this week. It seems that Argos has now more of them in stock, so if you're interested in purchasing it better hurry up. ;-)

As for the camera, so far so good. Pretty good video quality and, apart from the low mic volume and shaky videos (I'm now considering a tripod), it is nonetheless a fairly good camera.

Luckily, I've managed to get the SD card right the first time: bought a Sandisk 4gb SDHC Ultra 2 Class 4 at Jessops. They've got another similar sandisk sd card for camcorders which comes in a fairly large packaging, be careful as that's *not* the one I bought.

I will post some links with a few samples next week after easter holiday.

Works with play . com 16gb class 4. How to burn to DVD?

I've had the HV565E for a little while now and can report that it works well with the play.com branded class 4 16gb card. I've recorded a few days out and a holiday and still going strong.

My problem is that now I've got tired of playing back clips through the TV and want to burn to DVD but my laptop is stalling when attempting to process the 1440x1080 footage in Vista WMM/DVD Maker. I've installed the codec pack described earlier in the blog but it gets to 0.7% encoding in DVD Maker and stops doing anything - loads and loads of little systray icons showing.

I've had a go at using Super, as another poster suggests, to chnage to AVI, but when trying a few settings all appear to produce an AVI with squashed image, not retaining the widescreen settings even though I've tried the 'keep aspect' option and manually setting out-put to 1440x1080.

What are the recommended parameters for Super? Should I go down to a 720 HD size?

Any advice greatly appreciated - I'll check back a day or two.

Re: Hitachi HD Cam

I bought one of these a couple of weeks ago and this is what I have discovered so far...

Getting the footage onto a DVD to play on a normal dvd using a regular computer is a pain unless you use the 480i (VGA) resolution only. The VGA files can be edited easily in most editing software. If the editing package you use can't open the files change the file extension from 'MP4' to 'mov' Eg. change PIC100.MP4 to PIC100.mov. If you want to put 720 or 1080 res footage onto a dvd inorder to watch it on a normal dvd player then good luck as I really don't think it's possible as normal dvd discs can't provide HD to a normal dvd player. If you're really flash and have a computer that finds HD stuff a doddle then you can probably do anything (E.g Tri-core, water cooled, flux capaciterized doodah etc). I've just got a cheap Compaq computer who's processor is only about 1.9Ghz with a celeron chip and it plays the 480 footage perfectly, the 720 footage well enough although 1080 is jumpy.

The best way to keep all of your footage (whether it be 480, 720 or 1080i) and loose absolutely no quality during play back is to change the file extension from 'MP4' to 'mov' and burn all your footage onto a DVD (max 4.7Gb). Unfortunately this won't play back on any old dvd player but if you have an X-box 360 with an HDMI output or another type of upscaling dvd player with an hdmi output the files will play and be exactly as they were when they were recorded directly onto the sdhc memory card.

oh...that's another thing....if you are thinking of getting one of these Argos give you a £10 voucher for spending over £100. With this I was able to get the PNV 8gb class4 sdhc card that they sell for £4.69...BARGAIN!!! and it works fine!

I think I spoke too soon.

Can anyone help?

Yesterday I deleted some files off of the camera via the computer. After I unplugged it from the computer and turned on the camera to check it was OK I noticed that the timer which shows how much filming time was left had not changed from the figure it was before I dleted the footage (an empty 8gb at 480p at economy = 8.2 hrs but it was showing 5 hrs).

I figured the sdhc must have not been updated properly when connected to the computer and I decided to reformat it in the camera. However, once I had done this despite the filming time counter now being correct, if you film in 720 or 1080 it stops recording after about 40 secs and shows you the egg timer for about 20-30 secs before saving it to the card.

It was working perfectly before and you could record in hd for as long as you like but now it's as if the camera isn't as efficient as saving the data to the card.

It seems that reformatting the card in the camera has formatted it in a way thats made it slower to process stuff.

I did notice that on the PNV card previously there was some other file (other than the file in which your recordings are saved) which, since reformatting the card, has dissappeared. Is it possible that the PNV sdhc 8gb card came with some kind of software on it to make it work faster but now I've formatted it in the camera this software has been lost and impaired the cards performance. Or is the camera dodgy?

Please help?

I'm well dissapointed. I was thinking this cam was great. It was cheap and the picture looks fantastic, especially on a projector, but now it's not working anywhere near as well as it did. What's the point of a camera that can only record clips that last 40-50 seconds?

As I was eager to find out whether it was the sdhc card or the camera that was dodgy I bought another PNV card (this time only 4gb) and it works fine straight out of the box (not formatted by the camera). However my original 8gb card which was originally fine is still working much more slowly.

I guess the moral of the story is...do not format your nice new sdhc card in the camera. Leave it just they way it was out of it's packaging. Hopefully I'll be able to return the 8gb card and get a new one and ensure that I never even think about reformatting it in the camera.

If anyone knows a particular type of sdhc card that is 100% foolproof (when used with this camera) please let me know.

Here's an interesting one

Hello all,
I bought this camera on Thursday and since I didn't have a spare SD card I swiped a Kingston 2gb SD (not sdhc) out of my girlfriends camera and it worked fine. No problems with the "egg timer" locking up and downloaded via usb to windows in seconds.
Now the problem has come that I took Dan's advice and bought the exact same 4gb Sandisk series 2 card that he suggested from Jessops and I agree, it has no problem capturing the video and will play back on the camcorder. The problem arises when I plug the usb cable into the camcorder and click pc to link up, the screen turns off as it should but windows never finds the removable disk. If the card does come up (has done twice) it has nothing on it, but go back to the camcorder playback and it seems fine. If I put the sdhc card in a card reader it will come up too but requires more effort than just plugging the usb in. The card has been formatted and there is no problem with the camcorder as the kingston card worked. Has anyone else had this problem? Apologies if this has been covered but its a really long blog.

Jon, just to confirm, have

Jon, just to confirm, have you installed the driver that comes along in the CD? I had the same problem in my laptop, I then installed the driver and everything worked fine after that.

sdhc problem

Thanks for the reply.
I did install the driver but no luck but did get it working in the end by buying a sdhc card reader. Was very strange but after looking over the internet i am not the only one who suffers with the problem. There was a hotfix released for windows xp to fix the problem but wont install on SP3. But all is well now and very happy with the camera, brilliant piece of kit.
Cheers.

Memory card

Hi there all,

I am buying this wonderful looking piece of kit this week and i was just reading through here getting mighty confused at the minefield that is the memory card situation, i was wondering if anybody has tried these cards and if they worked

http://www.play.com/Search.aspx?searchtype=ELEC&se...

i am at university and i make documentaries and am very exicted at the thought of shooting in HD!

any help on picking a memory card that i will be shooting at 720 for the maximum amount of time allowed on the card.

Memory Card

Hi Justin!

I and others have found that the first one mentioned on the web site, the 8GB Sandisk. works just fine. I bought mine from Amazon at almost exactly the same price as that quoted.

Paul

Just to confirm. The 8gb

Just to confirm. The 8gb sandisk DID NOT work correctly in mine. I cant find a card over 2gb that will work. Might try a play one that someone mentioned.

I bought a Sandisk 4gb Ultra

I bought a Sandisk 4gb Ultra II card from Argos for about £12 and it's been alright so far. Just try and avoid formatting the card in the camera as it does something to the card which slows the data transfer down. I think it's best to get, at least, a class 4 card.

16GB Sandisk Memory Card works find!

Hi,

I just bought the video camera last week at Argos and slot in a 16 GB Sandisk SD card ... and it works just fine!

16GB Sandisk Memory Card works find!

Could you please tell us the class of this card? Is it class 2 or something else?

HITACHI DZ_HV565E Video camera (Argos) SDHC Cards

Recently got this camera it works fine now but I did have a problem with the memory card bought with it . It worked for a very short time then refused to save any video even after a re-format operation so I tried my Sandisk 4GB card from my phone it works well and I have ordered an 8GB one from Amazon as the local shops can't compete on price and hopefully it will work as well with more recording time. I note the manual says supports up to an 8GB card so it sounds good if it will support 16GB. A final point Transcend and Lexar SDHC cards do not work in my camera so watch out for any other reports on these two brands as it seems Sandisk are the ony cards that work with my camera?

Bought one over the weekend,

Bought one over the weekend, overall quite happy apart from the fact that I can't get the cam to display properly on my Sony Bravia TV. I bought a Kingston 8gb sdhc card at argos and it worked great out of the box without a format. I will be post precessing some footage in premiere and will post the results soon.

Plugging Cam into HD ready TV

Make sure you have all 5 component plugs plugged in (3 x video and 2 x audio). It won't work if you've only plugged in the 3 video plugs (green, blue etc).

hey guys bought this need

hey guys bought this need help with sommert how do i change the file to mpg or avi and can i copy my vids to disc to watch on my hd tv and ps3 any help would be great thanks

PS3 can play the mp4 files

PS3 can play the mp4 files immediately, if you have the 60gb PS3 you can pop the sd crad into the port in the front of it and just browse from the ps3 "video" menu on the XMB

How to pause during record?

I got one at Argos today and it seems pretty good value.

One question - I can figure out how to pause during recording - anyone know how to do this?

Pausing during recording

Hi Justin!

Unfortunately it's not possible. I've found that to be a bit of a nuisance myself after my long experience with the old-style film camcorders. As others have said it's a software job to combine your video runs though (accepting loss of quality) I found it quite easy to make up a seamless film using VCR.

Paul

good editing software for the video canera

Just a word about editing software for video,
I download and use software from

http://www.avsmedia.com/

great software, much better than Windows Movie maker
and it is easy to use.

Site problems

Hi Everyone

Just a quick note to say I've had a few issues with my site so I've had to revert to a backup and thus I've lost a few comments. I've managed to recover them but I'm going to have to submit them back to my site manually so the following comments have been submitted over the past few days by visitors.

Sorry for any trouble
Dan

Does anyone actually know the

Does anyone actually know the difference between these two cams? Thanks to this thread, I've decided to get one of these cams (and fingers crossed with SD card issues apparently...). I found a HV564E in my local comet and a refurbished HV565E from argos both for the same price. Now if the 565 is actually the next model up from the 564 then id be more than happy to get the refurbished one but with no definitive specs on the internet (why is hitachi's website so useless?) im not convinced it is actually any different. Does anyone know any definitive differences between these two 'exclusive' (lol) models argos and comet are competing with?
Cheers!

Hi Gareth! Since neither of

Hi Gareth!
Since neither of these "Hitachi" camcorders are actually made by Hitachi it may be that the 564 is just a variant sold in stores other than Argos which I note now has a good stock of the 565 again. As I've mentioned in an earlier posting my local Argos manager has confirmed that the camcorder is badged under licence. This applies to quite a few brand names sold by Argos from whom I have bought a "Morphy Richards" microwave despite the fact that Morphy Richards do not make any microwaves. I also have an elderly Hitachi DVD player, again unrecognised by Hitachi. I think the good news is that the company would presumably have some quality assurance and I'm certainly very pleased with my 565 camcorder.

A few weeks on and I'm very

A few weeks on and I'm very pleased with the camera, video quality is good even though it suffers from rolling shutter artifacts (skew and wobble) on moderate to fast movements. Its small enough to pack in your pocket and cheap enough to be easily replaceable should the worst happen.

OK what do I expect from a

OK what do I expect from a camera that cost less than £100 (ebay, Argos clearance & returns)? Well obviously everything but realistically.

Very light and plasticy, not as robust as my Sanyo Xacti C40.
No lens cap! OK the lens is recessed but a lens cap would be nice.
No flash!! Well I suppose it is supposed to be more of a video than still camera.
No anti-shake on video! OK on wide angle, but zoom in to max optical and it shakes with my respiration and heart rate (I run and do triathlons so have a v strong pulse at 50 bpm) My Xacti C40 is better on zoom for image stability but the video quality although good is way below the Hitachi.
That little plastic flap covering the SD card slot will not last long and is fiddly.
Wish I could charge straight to the camera instead of having to remove it but then I always buy a second so a minor niggle.
Reviewing still images, with a couple of hundred images only seeing a few at a time is going to tak eso long, againmy Xacti was better in that respect but again a minor niggle.

After a few minutes playing and experimenting:
SD card very much important, have used a variety fo no-namers to a Sandisk Ultra, all 1 or 2Gb and very definitely not above class II. They work, but I always cut and paste to my desktop. The cd contains the codec so that you can run on Media player, that way the playback is faster than trying to read from an SD card. I can also edit and convert before buring to DVD should I choose to do so.

720 or 1080? I actually found 720 to be smoother and sharper, but then that may be down to the cheapo cards I used. I also found a strange 3 second difference in sound to video at 1080, i.e. you hear the door open and 3 secs later the door opens! Video at 720, pretty damn good, again tha may be down to the cards I used.

Come on folks we are talking about a camera than costs about £100 or so. If you want a rock steady stable video you are not going to get it on a phone sized camera unless you stop breathing and slow your pulse rate down to about 2bpm even with anti-shake.

Low light weakness, get a camera with a decent sized apature, but then how will that fit in a pocket?

Conclusion, a few minor niggles but the video at 720 is pretty good, way better than any £600 camera I had before. No doubt in a year or two's time there will be cameras that fulfil all my hearts desires at about the same price and so what, until then I have a handy video camera that produces great video images that I can just stuff in a pocket. I will still keep my Xacti for the rough and tumble stuff and still photography

pictures?battery?

hi every one.
what about take a pictures, are they in good quality?how long is it take, that same like in regular camera?
battery:posible to get a spare one?how long is recording time?
i'm very impresive about that device and tomorrow i'm run to argos.

thanks to every body for information in here and special thanks for DAN.

Microphone socket?

Hi - very interested in this little camcorder, but for me sound quality is important. Could anyone tell me whether there is a microphone socket to add quality one? Also is there an online manual to check menu details?
Many thanks.

hi modbadger. there is no mic

hi modbadger.

there is no mic socket. and for me, the sound quality is this cameras worst point. There is a terrible hiss in the background of every recording. This can be cleaned up using some audio tools, but why should we have to bother?

Dan's picture

Sound isn't great

Hi

I agree with Jim, the sound quality isn't great and if this is an important factor for you it might be best to check out some other cameras first. As for an online manual, I don't know of one but if you have any specific questions I'd be happy to check the menu. For the price this camera does have a lot of options in the menu in terms of picture quality, but nothing related to sound.

Thanks
Dan

SDHC Card failure

Have purchased a Kingston 4GB SDHC Class 6 for use in the Hitachi HV565E it accepted the card for 5 minutes before showing card full .I was unable to use any of the controls while this card was in place. This camera however works with an old 500MB Viking card on HD fine. Is there any particular card that can be guaranteed to work as it appears that even some Scandisk cards do not work.

Dan's picture

Hi Ross mentioned in a

Hi

Ross mentioned in a comment above (http://murfitt.net/blog/dan/2009/02/01/hitachi-dz-...) that the SanDisk 8gb SDHC works. I have a SanDisk 4gb SDHC (class 2) in mine and I've not had any problems either.

Thanks
Dan

SDHC Card

When I first purchased this camera I bought a Lexor 2gb SD card, Argos sold this to me for half price when I bought the camera, that was a complete waste of money as it does not work properly in this camera. Luckily I had another use for this card or I wouldn't have been at all impressed.

Thanks to this blog I have recently bought a SanDisk 8gb SDHC (class 2) card from Amazon for £10.47 including delivery and so far have had no problems whatsoever.

I have also tried a 2gb Nintendo Wii SD card in this camera and that works fine as well.

Thanks,

Steve

SD Card - same problem with Lexar

I too have experienced the SD card failure problem with Lexar twice now - the first one I returned to Argos thinking it was the card that was the problem and got a replacement. It is rather irritating - why on earth have Hitachi not QA'd the device with as many makes of SD card as possible before releasing it?

I will check out one of the other cards to see how it fares and post the results here. But thank goodness for this blog or I would have gone mad.

SD problem solved

If you have trouble with SD cards do the following:

Download SDFormatterV2.0 from Matsusita (Panasonic) site, install in your PC and format SD through this software. SD cards require special formatting.

Hope I helped.

Visit Greece for summer holidays !!! Give your camera a reason to exist...

direct link to formattor

thanks for the the suggestion^^^^^^^^^

here is a direct link to the formatting software( download button right at the bottom of page):

http://panasonic.jp/support/global/cs/sd/download/...,

if people who have cards that did not work, try formatting with the above software and report back, I will appreciate it.

Thanks for the help everyone it helped me decide on buying this.

Definitely works :) I have a

Definitely works :)

I have a Kingston microsd 8 Gig, Class 4, that I put in an adaptor. Camera would stop after 26 seconds in 1080p capture after I allowed the camera to format it. Checking the card in a PC showed as 4k or so used and the rest as free space.

I then formatted it with the panasonic software and got 32k used shown in the PC properties. This worked fine in the camera (I shot a 5 minute video to check).

Then I repeated the procedure with a 4Gb generic class 4 micro SD card that I'd picked up a while ago. That had frozen, again at 26 seconds into the record, when I had allowed the camera to format it. After using the Panasonic software it worked fine.

I'd hazzard a guess that the firmware in the camera is formatting the card as FAT32 but using a 4k cluster size while the SDHC card itself is optomised for whatever the manufacturer decided upon - in the case of kingston 32k.

Replacement Battery

Has anyone purchased a new or additional battery. If so what were your experience. I pose this question because while I am still young enough I tend to travel afar and an extra battery is essential. I am very happy with my purchase and use a Scandisc class 6 card bought from Play.com ( this is not an advert),this card gave excellent results of me driving a rally car.

taibrics, i bought a second

taibrics, i bought a second battery from amazon. just did a search for NP60 battery and there are lots of them available. This battery also works in other models of camera from Fuji etc. I picked one up for a about £6 and it seems to do the job.

Ok, so I decided to take the

Ok, so I decided to take the plunge too and go and buy one of these bad boys. A few flaws, such as; allot of white noise, an inability to read anything else on the memory card meaning you can't format an old memory card to use it a battery you have to take out to charge, and the strange habit of un-focusing during filming (which you can get rid of but it takes a little experience to work out how to stop it). However, the main problem that I've found is one that I hugely need help with! I can upload the clips to my computer, however, they ARE NOT mpeg files (the usual hd format) and perhaps because of this, they wont play, the cd has an uncoder on it, but this simply gives media player the ability to use it, when I put the files into movie maker, or even Sony Vegas! They won't play, a sixty second clip turns into six images, changing every ten seconds. I REALLY NEED HELP WITH THIS!!! can anyone help me? My E-mail is tom--hill@hotmail.com for if anyone has any ideas...
Oh, by the way, I tried changing the file format from MP4 files, to a better suited file type but it simply shrunk the video down to about an inch and decreased the pixels!

Use quicktime player download

Use quicktime player download it from apple site. Quicktime for windows and it should play your files on your pc. Hope that helps. Btw if anyone has a Samsung F30 from Asda then get your moeny back with the 28 day money back gaurantee and buy one of these hitachi's!!! :) What i have done! lol

any 32GB SDHC cards working?

I know compatible SDHC cards is a common question but no one has mentioned any 32GB ones so I was just wondering if anyone has found a 32GB SDHC card that is compatible with this camera? I've tried a couple of unbranded ones from ebay (cos i didnt fancy spending £90 on a card!) but none have worked so far. another 16GB card didnt work and the only one the cam would accept was an old 512MB card i had lying around. It seems like a nice little camera for what I want but if I cant get a decent sized card in it my 3 months travelling will have to be condensed into 8minutes and 17seconds! not ideal! any recomendations? worst case scenario i could just buy a stack of 8GB cards to take! lol.

32GB SDHC Card

At the risk of sounding naive in my old age, if as confirmed on the Amazon site, a 32GB SDHC card would cost the thick end of £90 and an 8GB SDHC Sandisk can be had for £10, surely 4 of these would represent better value. The 8GB Sandisk, as I and others have found, works just fine and, even at finest quality gives over 2 hours. Over the years I've learnt, as a last resort, to follow the printed instructions first and if the apology for an instruction book gives 8GB SDHC as the maximum, I'd tend to go along with that. The only issue, from the many postings here, seems to be with the make of card and, for example, the Kingston has proved to be a problem. However, we all seem to be agreed that the aforementioned 8GB Sandisk should work just fine and for £50 you could buy 5 and get well over 10 hours recording.

Memory card choice?

Hi everyone
This site proved a fascinating read and was the contributing factor on my purchase on this camcorder, so thank you all for that.
I have to say I'm a little confused as to which memory card to buy. I'm using a Kingston 2GB normal SD card with no problems whatsoever but would really like to get a 8GB SDHC card to extend my recording range.
The manual states greater than class 4 but the available cards are countless and there seem to be a lot of confusion as to which really do work with this camcorder. Does anyone have a definitive answer or is it just pot luck?
Thanks again for all the info, top quality.

Memory Card

The card which I've been using with no problems since February is the Sandisk SDHC "Multi - use" 8GB (2) obtained for under £10 from Amazon. If you check back through the postings you'll find that, unlike the Kingston cards, the Sandisks generally have proved to be trouble free.

Paul

Thanks Paul. What resolution

Thanks Paul.
What resolution are you using the camera at?
I understood that you needed class 4 or above for 1080p but maybe they are just covering themselves with that.
If you are using 1080p with that card then I'll definately give it a go.
Thanks for the reply.

Memory Card

Hi Trickster!

So far I've shot all my video at 1440X1080 "Fine" which is the best definition available. Since this gives over 2 hours recording time and gives excellent HD video on my 42" Philps Ambilight TV I thought I might as well take advantage. Unless I've missed something tucked away in the fine print, the instruction pamphlet merely specifies an SD/SHDC memory card with no mention of class so I think that references to Class 4 or above are purely apocryphal. My guess is that this has resulted from problems with other makes of card regardless of class.

I've just re-checked the Amazon site and the card costs (with free postage) £10-49. Mine arrived in two days.

All the card details are in the so-called Instruction Manual APPENDIX EN-41

What does take longer to get the hang of is the conversion and linking of the files with various software. We have all also discovered that Windows Media Player doesn't recognise the MP4 format but there is no problem with Quick Time or various other alternatives. Also, being of the old JVC VHC generation, I found that it was much easier for just a quick linkage to transfer onto a video cassette where you can just re-wind slightly after each file to get a smooth run rather than use software to build up a master file and transfer to DVD. I admit, however that the video cassette loses the true HD quality but still gives an acceptable result which can be dubbed straight onto a DVD. My Toshiba then up-scales the DVD automatically so I'm not too far short of original quality.

Cheers

Paul

Thank you very much

Thank you very much Paul.
I'll get one ordered straight away.
I've not looked into software editing or transfer to DVD yet but I'm sure that's the next logical step.
I managed to get Windows media player to work after downloading a codec from a link on this page which was handy, I think the installed disc also has the codec but I'm very wary of installing new software on my laptop without being 100% sure what resources it consumes.
Amazon here I come.
Thanks again

DVD recorder?

Obviously those with PCs are struggling which is understandable with the Quicktime friendly files.

Seriously, one of the easiest ways around simple DVD creation is to get a cheapo DVD recorder! I used to use mine all the time to dump stuff to DVD from my Camcorders. Get a RAM disc and you can do some reasonable editing too.

Just a thought?

Dude, if this was on a tripod you could swear this was pro quality camera. Superb colour (is this on standard or Vivid - I use vivid as it makes for nice colours) and sound. The only test for any camera is for events like this. The auto focus even coped! Nice one man!

Memory Card

Hi,
I hope this helps others. Since purchasing the camera, I have tried various Memory Cards.
Kingston 8GB SDHC Class 6 - Does not work at all (card error displayed)
SanDisK 8GB SDHC Video HD Class 4 - Works for a short recording time & then stall with egg timer displayed (need to remove battery to restat camera).
Kingston 2GB SD Card - OK
SanDisk 2GB SD Card - OK
Just taken Delivery of SanDisk 8GB SDHC Class 2 & this is working OK on 720P Fine setting & no problems at all.
Others have suggested downloading various formatting tools etc. I have tried these with the various non working cards to no avail.
I have come to the conclusion that the camera works best with Non SDHC Cards up to 2 GB & SanDisk Class 2 SDHC cards.

Sandisk 8GB SDHC Class 2

Hi
Received the card today, well done Amazon.
Whacked it in and recorded 2hrs at max resolution straight away, no format needed either.
Put it in my Dell laptop and the card was instantly recognized. Playback was fine with Windows Media Player direct from the card and transferred the file to my laptop at around 7 meg a second.
Absolutely delighted.
Thank you for all your help.

Mixing videos from the camcorder

I bought this camcorder today, i am impressed with the video quality. BUT I am unsure if there is any software that can be used to mix / edit the vodeos from this camcorder ( I was planning on putting a few of my videos together with some backgroung music)
I was wondering if you knew what software could be used so i can make clips into videos ?

Can anyone tell me what the playback is like on an 'old' telly?

I know there has been WAY too much discussion about the memory card saga, but have we come to a definative answer yet on the best conditions (class, size etc) and the things to avoid?

Well done Dan

I just wanted to say that I think it's amazing that people are still having problems with this camera and It's people like Dan who create great informational blogs and help so many people out. Manufacturers should take note and start supporting the people that are helping advise 'their' customers!

I still love my Hitachi DZ-HV565E and use it all the time to capture great memories.

Keep up the good wok Dan, it's appreciated by all.

Of course, Dan doesn't have a WOK that takes video, so hopefully he will keep up the good 'work' instead ;) !

Cracking camera

I read this before buying the camera... then purchased it and so far, no problems. I bought a 8GB SDHC card from amazon.co.uk and have been out filming for the last month or so. My only issue is that you cannot pause recording and then carry on recording in the same clip. You have to start, stop and then start again - which means a new clip is recorded. So, you cannot pauses while recording. The other issue, it records in high quality MP4 which is not compatible with Windows Moviemaker, so you have to convert clips to AVI which makes you lose quality.

Other than that.. cracking camera...and you can check out my work @ www.umaronline.tk

Thanks

p.s.. anyone know where I can buy a decent tripod and another battery for the camera?

I bought this camera 2 weeks

I bought this camera 2 weeks ago and have been using a Lexar 8gig sdhc class 4 card with it and had no probs with it...i have also used windows moviemaker with the mp4 files it makes.I did install klite codec pack and windows moviemaker is the version wich comes with vista not xp.

Another good program for converting the files is AVSVideoConverter, wich i have used to convert to mpeg files for making dvds with the movies clips i have shot. To make a movie and dvd from start to finish i often use MAGIX Movie Edit Pro 15 Plus, wich will also convert the movie clip mp4 into any other format .

Thanks

The k-lite codec pack worked well for me. I can now transfer clips to Windows-Movie-Maker and edit them in the form they were filmed (MP4), so no need to convert.

Iv finally noticed the hiss noise you lot were talking about in clips I filmed yesterday. It's not that bad.

Can I playback video clips in One-go

Sorry am not too techy, but can i play back my video recording in just one instance without the need to press play for each recording......Regds Charlie

New problem....

I tried plugging the camera into my hdTV and it didn't work. The camera LCD screen went blank, the camera was still on but blank and there was nothing on TV. Can anyone help on TV playback. Thanks

New Problem

Hi!

Obviously each TV will have its own features but I also had problems at first with my Philips HDTV. I assumed that, from the AV drop down menu something like HDMI 1 or 2 would be the correct one but also obtained a blank screen each time. Eventually I discovered that Ext3DVD was the one that worked so it might be worth checking all the AV options.

Paul

Thanks but no luck

Hey Paul. Thanks for your help but it doesn't work. I plugged in the camera and the LCD on the camera went blank. I then went from AVI to AV4 and also the HDMI channels but they were all blank too. I may have to look into the camera internal features or call hitachi when I get the time...

Just out of interest, its a Panosonic viera.

TV Playback

A couple of points, Umar. As we have discovered, despite the badging, the camcorder is not actually made by Hitachi - it's merely badged by Argos under licence. At the risk of suggesting the obvious, if the TV has a card slot you could try that, though I guess it would have to be a normal SD card and the MP4 format would probably not be recognised anyway.

I note that Panasonic claim that the Viera is an ideal partner for their own HD camcorder so presumably they reckon it should link up/

Get one - it's fun and does the job

Nice reviews here guys. I got one of these yesterday and I am very impressed. Like many I don't want £££££'s technology for taking away on holidays and trips out. For £117 this is the business. Proper HD, easy to use, takes cheap cards (more on that in a moment) and does what it says on the tin.

Like many I am always snapping stuff on my mobile and wanted better quality but small and light so I can chuck it in my pocket. I have very young children and miss out on so much stuff - in fact nearly all of my videos are from Mobile phone as that is convenient.

This camera does the job - there appears to be people moaning about the camera, but this always seems to be card quality. I played with one of these long ago when they were more expensive and put in a cheap card I had - it egg timered me out. In it now is a 8GB MicroSD HC (in a SD card holder of course!) and it is no problem. The first video I took with it though didn't save. When I put the card into my MAC it was empty (no folders nothing). I formatted it (using it's own menu) and since then no problems at all. Seems it needs a format to put it's folders in place and you are good to go. The fact there are so many impressive You Tube videos taken with it - snow vids will seriously test and cameras white balance - testifies to it's use.

If you want a pro, high end camera then this isn't it - but in todays YouTube Facebook world - we want light, easy to use and fun - this camera has all that.

I have made some vids on my Mac and even some DVD and the quality is superb. I haven't got a 1080 TV, just a 720 but the quality is very nice. Have mine set to 720 and Fine - get nearly 3 hours on a 8GB card - sorted!

Yep, I agree

Cracking review dude and I agree with every word. It's fun and easy to use. I've been out filming, Check out the video's on my blog @ www.umaronline.tk OR youtube channel: http://www.youtube.com/umarf786

TV Playback

I'm still following all the comments since, even at my age, I've still got a lot to learn :-)
I just wondered whether Umar had solved his problem of HD playback on his TV.

Paul

No luck

Sadly no luck dude. I've resonded above. If you are the same Paul.

Update..

Sorry, meant to say that my MicroSD HC is a Sandisk. Seems this brand is the one to get!

As for software, sorry guys but I have an iMac and guess what - you don't need to convert anything. Plug in the camera, screen pops up to import direct into iMovie/iDVD - a 30 minute movie/dvd takes about 20 minutes to process with menus and everything - and not a codec download in sight.

If you are seriously into your movie production - sell Bill Gate's PC and get a Mac. Worth every penny.

Software

Guys, as you know, I've had the camera for a while now! ... still loving it.

Just wanted to say that I use Adobe Premiere Elements (PC) and don't have any issues. I know Movie Maker does .. but come on ... Movie Maker!

Rich
Videos: http://www.youtube.com/richardmackney

Crash

I was going to but that Adobe package but the reviews said that it crashed quite alot. I'm not sure any video editing software that doesn't tbh. Movie-maker is a nightmare when it crashes!

A new issue!

A new problem has emerged and help would be appreciated. How the heck do you put one of these things on a tripod. I ordered a cheap tripod off amazon and it arrived today. Now, on the bit which you connect to the camera, you have a screw and next to it.. a silver button that you can press in whilst screwing the camera on. However, with this camera, at the bottom where the screw goes in there is the strap holder... and it makes it virtually impossible to screw on... and get past that small silver button....!

I'll try to get photos on soon... but if anyone has an idea.. help would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Tripod

Umar, I can see what you mean. The silver button won't be used on this camera as it doesn't have a locking off hole. If it's just a cheap tripod maybe you should just permanently stick it/wedge the button down!

The pics on my blog ( http://bit.ly/HD-CAM ) show it on a Gorillapod (closeup), also there is a pic at the bottom of the page. This doesn't have a locking button.

batteries

hi i have just bought one of these and would like to buy a spare battery where can you purchase these from thanx linda

Battery

I purchased one from Amazon for £2.47

Ex-Pro High Power 1100mAh Replacement Lithium Li-on Camera Battery

Works fine in my HITACHI DZ-HV564E 1080i High Definition SD Video Camera.

Mine Doesnt Work... SD Card Issue?

Just bought one from Argos... Have dropped in an 8GB SDHC SanDisk.

It allows me to take pictures - magic... but when I change it to camera mode and click the red button.... Nothing :(

Its not a case of broken button, as I can use the button when navigating the menus (and when taking stills)

The guide says it will not allow recording if the Card is full, but its not - it says 2 hours at the top of the screen.

Just nothing.

I have tried Argos customer service - and they dont seem to beleive me.

Might just have to take it back for a replacement, but not even sure I kept the receipt (little foolish)

Could it be anything to do with the Class of the SDHC card?

Its a good make - and I cant see there being much more expensive cards.

Dont want to fork out big money for a Kingston and for it to be a camera fault...

Any ideas?

Hi Jason! You don't say what

Hi Jason!

You don't say what make of card you've tried. So far nobody, including myself, has had any problems with the Class 1 Sandisk 8GB SDHC card around £10 from Amazon.

Paul

Doh – knew I would miss

Doh – knew I would miss something!

I have tried an 8GB SanDisk SDHC in mine, but I think I remember someone mentioning it was ‘Class 2’ if that makes sense.

I have had some posts above mine pointed that a lot of people struggled with the 8GB and found the 4GB SDHC to be far more compatible. I have now ordered 4x Kingston 4GB SDHC’s from eBay and hope to try them out at some point.

Unfortunately, before discovering this – I had already ordered another 2x 8GB SDHC SanDisks, again – I believe these to be ‘Class 2’.

In honesty, I have no idea what the ‘class’ means.

Is Class 1 better?

4GB should hold around an hour of footage, so im hoping the 4x Kingstons work a treat.

Another sucess!

Took the plunge and bought this:
http://www.play.com/Electronics/Electronics/4-/108...

got past the magic 26sec mark with no problems straight out of the box. thought they were great value for 2 8gb cards with free delivery

just thought i would share it with you guys!

Help! new problem

Finally tried to make some recordings and im having a problem with synching.
unless ishoot on VGA, the sound is out by 3-4 seconds to the movement!!

has anyone else had this and how do you resolve it.
could it just be my crappy old PC is too slow for this?

Hi I dont know anything about

Hi

I dont know anything about Camcorders but have found this site helpful
I looking at buying the above camcorder, will it record in good quality for banger racing etc? and fast moving objects?
And can some1 help with a decent memory card, as the reports are confusing on here
Thanks

It has a problem with

It has a problem with movement. That is you get a rippling and stuttering of the image, but it mainly happens in hand held type situations where you are trying, ironically, to keep the thing as still as possible. There are two ways around -
1 use a tripod and let your subject move in the frame. This usually produces nice results.Similarly a good pan can be achieved with the right tripod head and a steady arm.
2 pan and move the camera like a lunatic - the motion will be so fast that the problem will be unnoticeable! For the price you can't expect movie quality. :)

SanDisk 8GB SDHC Memory Card,

SanDisk 8GB SDHC Memory Card, will this be a good card to have and will it work?
Also, how long roughly will it record for on this card?
Thanks

Sandisk 8GB SDHC Card

Yes, this is the card which I and others have used with no problems. Even at the 1720p fine setting you get just over 2 hours.

Fantastic, thanks for ur help
I think i will be getting both this weekend

Camcorder

I want to say that this camcorder it's like my dream.

Quality

Bought this the other day, stuck my sandisk 8gig micro sdhc in it in a holder. Works perfectly, videos can only be viewed through media player, anything else and it stutters. Viewing the videos back on my panansonic 1080p tv the recording was very very good. Really was not expecting that quality. The zoom is smooth, autofocus is easily fixed by zooming in and out.
I really cant find anything bad to say about it. Obviously low light situations it suffers. Recording at 1080p res with fine detail apparently for 2hours 11 mins as stated in the instruction book provided.

Video Player - Videolan

VLC Video player - Plays back the video files faultlessly - Freeware, just Google it and download.

Also Google for 'Any Video Converter'so you can copy to a format that you can burn to DVD

Hitachi DZ-HV565E

Hi
Just bought the camcorder and an 8GB Sandisk SDHC card. Had problem on playback as the camera 'froze' when deleting pictures. It donned on me that the card needed to be formatted. This solved the problem.

When the card is placed in card reader the computer doesn't recognise the files. When bringing up the card reader drive in my computer it acts as though the disk is empty then says that the disk needs to be formatted.

Can you help?

Card Reader

I have a separate USB connected card reader which doesn't read SDHC, as opposed to normal SD cards. I imagine more up to date ones would but I simply transfer the files directly from the camcorder with no problems.
Paul

Card Reader

Hi Paul!

Thanks for your comments. I tried a 2GB SD card. Took a few pics. Put it into card reader and it worked fine. May have to look into an up-date on my card reader.

Bill

Hi, This camera aint

Hi,
This camera aint reeeaaally "Exclusive" to Argos
-

It's a Hitachi re-branded version of a popular and cheap chinese camera that can be found on ebay anywhere, anywhen! =]

Divine value for money!

But... the guy who said he transfers to VHS then to DVD... and doesn't notice any degradation in quality...
never get a job in marketing.

As we've already discovered,

As we've already discovered, Argos is licensed to use sell sorts of re-badged items including a whole raft of "Morphy Richards" products. I'm old enough to remember when we laughed at cheap Japanese imports but I reckon China is rapidly improving in some areas, though I'd still be wary, from a safety angle, of some of their toys for my grandchildren! I could possibly be the guy who mentioned going via VHS as a quick way to get an acceptable DVD, though I did say that there was a loss of quality from HD, which was slightly alleviated by the up-scaling of my Toshiba DVD/VCR recorder. I went this route as a quicker alternative to software when quality was not of the absolute essence since I'm well used to building up VHS tapes from the old VHSC ones in my antique camcorder. Overall I'm well pleased with the "Hitachi" though I do miss the ability to pause and edit within the recorder itself and also the fact that I'm unable to record HD quality directly onto DVD in my Toshiba.

Paul

I finally bought one

After reading these reviews and a few other dotted around I decided to give it a go, Have used Sandisk 4GB Ultra II's with no probs and also tried a Kingston class 2 2GB and that worked fine as well. Pleased with the video quality, audio leaves a bit to be desired but the cam its replacing is a Samsung cheapo so anything was better. Taking it on hols now so we'll see how it performs.

Help me Guys and Gals!!!!

Please help!!

I know this has been mentioned before, but no answer was posted.

When i record in anything other than VGA mode, I get a delay between the sound and the image (sound first, then video) of about 2 seconds (worse on full HD) ,

Is this a duff camera? duff cards? duff PC? or have i got a setting wrong somewhere?

I really need this sorting as I go on hols in 2 weeks and this is what the cam was bought for.

Dan's picture

Hi Sorry this wasn't answered

Hi

Sorry this wasn't answered before (I'm finding it hard to keep up with these posts myself!).

First, let's rule out a few things:

Does the video play back fine on the camera itself?

If not, have you tried any other cards? (Mine is a class 2, SDHC Sandisk and it works fine) People have reported problems with various cards on this camera, but the problems tend to be related to recording stopping all together and not sound/video synchronisation.

If it plays back fine on the camera, are you copying the files onto your PC before playback (maybe your card reader can't keep up?)?

Also, have you tried the videos on another PC - preferably with a higher spec? The files, especially in 1080p, are quite huge and can take up a lot of memory to play back.

If the problem can be isolated to your PC at least you know in the meantime that you can take your camera on holiday and record.

Let me know how you get on. Hope this helps :)

Dan

never thought to check the

never thought to check the playback on camera!!
plays back fine on camera so its eiher the movie players ive tried or my crappy old pc. will try it on another pc sometime

any suggestions on the best movie player
tried WMP, real, vlc all have same out of synch problem

Video and sound out of sysnc on playback

I've found on my playback its a function of my PC, not a problem with recording. Try downloading other free media players such as Real or the free Div X player, and you should find one which will play back in sync.

Had the camera a couple of months, other then the slow auto focus at distance I think its a great little video camera, just
remember a couple of years ago we were still messing around with tape!

any tutorials on how to set this thing for HD quality

Any good tutorials on how to get this thing to capture HD quality vids, have the 8gb-6 class etc,but i just cant get that super hq quality.ive gone from 720-1080-even vga,ut its still grainy for me.
thank you

PC

OK, after about two months of this I've found out way around everything.

Memory Card;
Sandisk is best, have a 2gb one and have had no complaints... Any main brand will do really, just not cheap rubbish like tesco brand.

TV playback,
Works perfectly but not always with more modern TV's, so if you have a modern HD tv then you'll need to have a look through every channel to find the right one.

HD quality;
Due to it having a manual focus it's kind of hard to get the hang of, but after a few films you'll have the knack for it, if i's impossible to get good quality out of it then you've got yourself a faulty camera :(

Sound;
The white noise on this thing is terrible, but with a simple trip to a sound editing suite, you'll be fine!

Editing and playback;
It kicks out an unkind little format that ges by the name of mp4, mp4 is actually a mask name and you'll find that mp4 means about 200 different formats, our one being a real pain in the arse, there is also a flaw in the format that not all players will understand and will just give you 20 frames from a one minute clip, smarter players such as real player and quicktime will see around this. EDITING! windows movie maker - NO! sony vegas - NO! almost impossible to edit, how ether, I have in the post at the moment a pretty nifty little editing program made by adobe, it's called movie plus five, and it shares codecs with quicktime! meaning with a bit of luck, it will support the format and work perfectly, you can pick it up from their website for about 10 - 60 pounds. HOW ETHER! I can not yet guarantee that it will work as I plan yet, so I will try it as soon as it arrives and report back to you!

Sound out of sync
I haven't personally had this problem, but as I said you'll need to take out the sound to reduce the whitenoise (background noise) anyway, so you can just re sync it when it's back in I would also suggest a better media player.

HD
It's called HD loss, basically it a cures when a low spec piece of shit has a HD lens put on it, the camera can understand it but hasn't got the brains or indeed the capability to use such a thing, if you want true HD, stop being cheap and get a camera fro more than £130!

Card reading problems;
IT COMES WITH A USB CORD! USE IT!

I hope this helped, I've answered a couple of these questions so it will come up in my inbox if you have any reply's or questions or whatever, and I'd be more than happy to help.

Thanks, Tom

Thanks

Great post Tom. Thanks for the info!

As for editing software - I use Adobe Premiere Elements (about £50)... it's cool and works with this format.

Rich

MANUAL FOCUS - WHAT MANUAL

MANUAL FOCUS - WHAT MANUAL FOCUS? Tell me tell me tell me....

HD - surely it's not an HD lens but an HD sensor with a crappy lens which can't do justice to the sensor?

Editing

There is a new version of Windows live movie maker that supports HD videos in 720p and 1080p. Here is the link

(edited) http://download.live.com/moviemaker

The program does not run on Windows XP. It works on Windows Vista and Windows 7. Hopefully it will support these mp4 files also.

I have not installed the program as I am running XP. If you dont want to use the link I provided just google Windows Live Movie Maker and that should send you to the right place.

I have tried converting the files to a format that windows movie maker does support but it usually stretches the picture and the images look crap.............. hopefully this will help you guys out.

K-Lite Codec

I have installed K-Lite Codec pack on my laptop which allows me to work with the MP4 files recorded with this camcorder in Window movie-maker

You can download it here

http://www.free-codecs.com/download/K_lite_codec_p...

I agree with those lack of audio in sync problems but I've tried both WMP and VLC and had no luck, so I'm not presuming my laptop is not good enough in its RAM. I have now had this camera for around 2 and half months and had no major issues whatsoever. I've been out and about, using it for filming events in the Bradford region for my website http://www.umaronline.tk and it has served me well. The sound can be a little iffy, especially when filming at music concerts (see my video channel on youtube for more) and the battery life has caused issues a few times but other than that, superb for a first camera. I'm still struggling to deal with connecting it for HD playback on my HDTV. Any help will be appreciated.

Thanks

Conversion Software

Hi all, not been here for sometime now, been happy with my purchase (still no firmware update though). I found this software called MediaShow Espresso its by cyberlink of all people. Link is:

http://www.cyberlink.com/products/mediashow-espres...

Software cost £29.99 but you can try the trial first. Its really simple and works very well on my old p4 machie. God nows how well it will perform on a more up to date machine.... I've been leaving it to convert bulk lots of 1080p files to mpeg2/wmv, and im now able to edit without ne hassles in adobe premiere and windows movie maker. I cant tell you how highly i rate this conversion software.

When i use to play the 1080p hi res files they use to stutter and go out of sync in VLC, to fix this i did the following:

- Open the "Preferences" dialog and select show all settings, navigate to "Input / Codecs" -> "Other Codecs" -> "FFmpeg"
- Change the setting of "Skip the loop filter for H.264 decoding" to "All"

Umaronline, when your screen goes blank on you camera, I know this might be silly but are you changing your source on your tv? coz the screen on my camera goes blank aswel, i then chnage the source to component i think on my 50" Sammi and then i can see the screen from the cam on the tv. Anyhow to be honest with you connecting it directly to the tv is shite. I use my laptop through the vga connection (full 1080p) and the 1080p files look crystal clear. howver im thinking of buying a hd media player, one that maybe has a SD port, like the AC ryan playonHD player, or the popcorn hour (usb port), and using that for all my media plus when i wana watch my camera files id just take the card out pop it into the machine which would be connected to the plasma via a hdmi cable.

nehow i think i waffled on too much, better get back to some work....night shift...grrr

let me know how u get on.

Rick

hitachi DZ- HV565E

Hi, can anyone tell me how to remove the display icons from the screen when in TV playback? Thanks

display icons

Hi Geoffrey!

I found that all the display icons can be removed by just lightly touching the mode button when playback starts.. This certainly works for me when in HD playback. If you press too hard it's likely to re-start the file.

Paul

HV565E

Hi Paul, really appreciate your fast response. It would have taken me a lifetime to figure it out and it is a great help. Thanks a lot, Geoffrey

hitachi DZ- HV565E

Hi Paul, I have another question for you! Do you know how to playback continuous video clips? I can only play them one at a time and it is a bit of a pain really. Everything else is pretty good. Appreciate your help if poss. Geoffrey

Continuous clips

Hi Geoffrey!

As one of the old school of camcorder users I've found it a bit of a nuisance that on TV playback with the Hitachi you can only play back one file (ie video run at a time) and also it's impossible to pause and continue recording.

Of course, as you can see from the several useful postings on the subject, there's plenty of software (including some free) which enable you to combine and edit the MP4 files and, from this you could make up a DVD for playback.

However, I agree with your implication that it would be nice not to have to keep starting and stopping each video clip when viewing newly recorded videos in HD on the TV. It's especially irritating that the leads are rather short and I have to park the camera and dash back to my armchair to watch the excellent quality on my 42inch Philips! My resolution is to try to train myself to take rather longer video runs in future.

Paul

Shutter Speed ?

can anyone please tell me if you can change the shutter speeds ?
from what i know is that you need to select different modes to obtain the desired shutter speed. Any ideas as to which mode has the fastest/slowest shutter speed ?

thank you

Shutter Speed

Hi, I got this camera and it is very good, have a look at some of the pictures I have taken (this is just since the end of July 09)

http://www.flickr.com/photos/nejewathebiker/sets/7...

That should give you an idea of what the images are like, also the ISO speed choices are 'Auto', '64', '100', '200' and '400' I think thats the shutter speed isn't it?

Hope that helps,

These pictures look great!

These pictures look great! I'm very impressed with the quality. Thanks for posting them!

Dan

Shutter speed

I've checked the EXIF data off these images and it's very incomplete. In any case the diaphragm has a very narrow latitude - something like f/3.3 - 3.9 so there is litte or no variability in the various program modes anyway. In theory portrait should maximize aperture and give you a faster shutter speed and sports pretty much the same. Landscape may minimize the aperture and give you a longer exposure. The only variable you can directly control is the ISO speed. This is not the same as the shutter speed but it shifts the whole sensitivity of the camera up or down. High ISOs will give you a grainier image however. If you want fast shutter speeds try ISO 400 and sports mode. If you want best quality choose ISO 64 and landscape mode - but remember to use a tripod.
In all - don't expect great photographs from this camera. This is a budget camcorder with full automation and "HD" at an unrivalled price. If you want to take great photos go and buy a dirt cheap 35mm slr or a low range digital slr.

Hitachi DZ-HV565E

Have found this blog extremely useful in deciding whether to get this camera or not. Have bought it today and just put the battery on charge, it says, in notes on battery usage, to charge and discharge once then recharge before use. What is the way to discharge it? I would appreciate some advice, thanks

Dan's picture

Run the camera flat

Hi Anonymous june!

I'm glad you've found this useful! There's been way more response to this then I ever thought!

I don't think there is an option to discharge as such. I think it means to charge the battery fully, run/use the camera until the battery is completely flat, then charge the battery fully again. Sometimes people charge the battery when there is still 50% power left, but the notes seem to suggest that you shouldn't do this, for the first run at least.

Thanks, I hope this helps.
Dan

card

Do i need a card reader to put a 8mb card in or will it fit in the camera, I already have a 4mb card but thought it would be good to have a bigger capacity? Have tried going on amazon to order one plus a spare battery, having a bit of trouble finding the right battery with all the choice. Would appreciate some help, thanks.

Batteries

Hi Dan and June, just to add to your comments on batteries. When ever you buy any gadget with rechargeable batteries it is best to fully charege then use it until it is completely flat, do this at least 3 or 4 times before you start charging the battery mid way through it being flat. Rechargeable batteries have "Battery Memory" and if you were to put the battery on charge when it was half flat and keep doing this then the battery "Thinks" this is its full, flat cycle and you will end up with a battery that will not give you the reccomended time. Pieman.

Thanks Dan, now I can get on and use the camera.

Converting files

i cant seem to convert are do eny thing with my camras footage when i conect it to my PC. all i can do is play them with Quick time, but i want to be able to edit and upload to Youtube

is there a program are a setting to alow me to do this!

Dan's picture

MP4Cam2AVI

Hi

If you're on Windows you can use a program like MP4Cam2AVI (http://sourceforge.net/projects/mp4cam2avi/) to convert the compressed MP4 files (which the camera produces) to AVI format. These can then be imported into Windows Movie Maker for rearranging/editing. Then you can upload the exported, edited video from Windows Movie Maker to YouTube. You can also upload the video files directly from the camera to YouTube if they don't require editing.

I don't think there's an option to convert to sound only so maybe you are missing a codec required to play the avi file? Are you getting an avi file as an output from the program?

HV565E

My HV565e arrived yesterday. So far I've been experimenting with it. What I have noticed is that when I upload 1080 footage into iMovie 6 I get a black bar on the left and a laterally squashed image. With the other sizes this doesn't happen. When I play back 1080 footage in quicktime I get an image which thinks it is twice the size it really is and plays back very jerky. I have a mac and cannot install the decoder as the disc is for windows only. Hitachi's website seems to not have a decoder for mac. Anyway I now have a copy of Final Cut Express to experiment with and I hope I can produce smooth playing footage in the right proportions else I will be really disappointed. Aside from that the autofocus is often poor and it has no manual focus as advertised. Still, it's a steal for £70.

O.O"

Youve got to be kidding me right?!?!?!
The reason your image looks squashed on imovie is because the video file size is at 1440x1080 so when you import it into imovie it squashes the video size so it will fit into the preview screen! The other sizes dont look squashed in imove because imove doesnt need to change the size much! When you render your video and upload it wherever it will still be 1440x1080...
The reason your video file looks laggy or jerky whatever is your computers fault (your computer might of been working slow at the time you were playing the file!)

Cannot copy from camera to PC

hello.

No one else here seems to have this problem but I have not idea what I can be doing wrong. if anyone could help that would be great.

When I drag and drop the files fromn the camera to my pc I get this error message -

'Cannot copy PICT...the parameter is incorrect'

This seems to happen with files over 20mb - and because that's only about 2 minutes that's pretty much all of them!

The card is formatted (SanDisc SD 2, 2GB). Surely this camera is designed to take films longer than 2 minutes?

Any solutions would be most welcome. thanks.

...actually 20mb is 30 seconds!

not 2 minutes.

Not detecting as webcam.

Hello guys,

I am wanting to use this as a webcam but Windows 7 is not detecting it.
I have heard that some people have got this to work on Vista/Xp without installing any drivers at all, even when I installed the drivers(tried both XP and vista drivers) it did not work.

Hittaci DZ-HV565E

Inte rested in using as awebcam cant get it to work on either XP or widows 7 any ideas

HD content

After reading all the articles I am getting the DZ HV565 for the good reports. My querry is once I have filmed some shots in HD wether 720 or 1080 I know I can watch them back via the TV and also on my computer but what about putting the HD content onto dvd disc. I have read the articles saying use a converter to put it onto disc but what format and would they be in the original 720 or 1080 when on the disc or are they downsized to play on dvd machines.

one for sale

I'm selling mine

Used only once but it wasn't practical for what i wanted
I thought it was small enough to fit strapped to my goggles for skiing but it was a little too bulky and i didn't want to be holding it.
I tried it in an indoor slope last month

I've ended up with a second hand samsung miniket that has a built in helmet bullet cam.
quality isn't anywhere as good but I will use it

I've taken less than 10 mins of video with The Hitachi and was pleased with the results but i'm not a great skier and cant be holding a camcorder and trying to miss the others

It comes with an 8gb card that i had no issues with

Don't suppose i've got the box as i buy too much rubbish to keep all the boxes.
Manual, charger and 8gb card included

I want £70 plus postage call it £75

I would't think the Hitachi

I would't think the Hitachi would be any good for that anyway. When you're moving so much like that the image bends and warps. Doesn't look good.

How can i put the videos

How can i put the videos straight into Movie maker and edit them and publish?
Everytime i do it, it crashes and the files are huge- I have to convert them and then put them into movie maker, publish them but i lose a lot of quality once compressed etc
I have the disc at home but doesnt seem to be anything of use on it!
can u help or give advice?
Thanks

Spare usb cable

I have got one of these but have managed to lose the usb cable. They did not have a compatible one at Curry's. So the question is where can one get a spare USB cable for one of these cameras?

Thanks

Lost disks and spares

I contacted Hitachi about downloading the neccessary drivers for this camera (I broke the disk). I recieved this reply:

There are no Drivers available to download. Everything that you need would be on the Disc supplied.

Additional copies of this disc, if available, can be obtained from our spares supplier, Charles Hyde Ltd., Tel. No. 01759 303 068

Has anyone else found that

Has anyone else found that the file names created by the camera if you set it to continuous record are in the following format?

PICT0001
PI010001
PI020001

As I record a 2hr football practice with three of these cameras, the files are approx 3Gb, 3Gb and 1Gb in size respectively. I'm using a Transcend 8Gb Class 6 SDHC card in each case.

I'm running into issues whereby I want to reassemble the three into one, clip sections out and export them for web using Quicktime Pro. I've found that while PICT0001 seems consistently to work fine, the latter two files can refuse to be edited/expoerted by QT Pro at all, and the same problem in MPEG streamclip.

Checking the Apple discussions, it sounds likes the format of MP4 / H.264 this camera uses is not 100% compatible with 'real' H.264. But what I can't fathom is why the camera always prduces these three files, in the same order every time, and after the firs tone, the second two can prove impossible to edit in any way shape or form.

Does anyone know of a setting or upgrade available where I can redefine the file formats or setting, preferably to create just one contiguous file? The cameras are unmanned so I can't stop/start them manually - they have to run for 2 hours.

Holiday Use

Last month I spent 2 weeks with my family in Sicily (just below Mount Etna). For reasons of convenience and weight the only camera I took was this little Hitachi with an 8 gig card. The decision proved to be excellent and I now have a great mix of video runs and stills. Occasionally I mistakenly forgot to change the mode when I wanted a still shot so there are a few unintentional mini video runs but all in all I am still impressed with this great little camera.
